Bethel Families,
Yesterday afternoon, we had an incident involving the driver of one of our buses. The parents of the affected students were notified last night with the following message from Superintendent Nutter:
"Good Evening. We had an incident with the driver of Bus #4 today, I apologize and I am deeply sorry for the worry this has caused, the inconvenience, and the late arrival home, all of which is unacceptable and will be dealt with. The one thing that I am thankful for is that all children were returned home safely. The Miami County Sheriff's Office has taken the lead on this and started an investigation. The driver was put on administrative leave immediately and an investigation into this matter is now ongoing. Any and all information will now run through the Miami County Sheriff's Office. We are fully cooperating with the authorities."
Please see the press release below from the Miami County Sheriff's Office regarding the incident.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Miami County Sheriff's Office Investigates Reckless School Bus Incident
Phoneton, OH – September 10, 2025 – The Miami County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) is investigating a reckless driving incident involving a Bethel Local Schools bus carrying five children, reported on September 9, 2025, near U.S. Route 40 and South State Route 202. Multiple 911 calls reported the bus swerving across lanes and partially off the roadway, prompting a swift response from deputies.
A deputy arrived to find the bus stopped by a concerned citizen. The driver exhibited signs of impairment, including unsteadiness and constricted pupils, leading to a voluntary blood draw at Huber ER. The sample is pending lab results to determine if OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) charges apply. The children were unharmed and transferred to another bus.
The case remains under investigation, with charges pending lab confirmation. MCSO appreciates the community's quick action in reporting the matter.
